thought I'd better drop in and say Hi.
I have two goldfish which I inherited from my daughter when she went round the world!3 years ago (she got them from her friend, who now lives in NZ!!)
They were tiny when we got them but are now huge!! one's about 6" and the other about 8". I thought goldfish were easy to look after... not anymore!!!
I've struggled with finding help with ailments, the usual whitespot and fin rot so have bought books and got some help from my pet shop but now one of the fish has a sooty appearance?!...blackish edging on it's finsand on parts of the body, anyone any ideas? the larger one is ok
I use a Bio orb30 and I have in a firstaid filter (they had fin rot last week), I've checked the water quality and it seems ok
Can anyone advise?

Hi there starfish and welcome,
i think that the main cause of your problems are the size of the tank, a 30L bi-orb is no where near big enough for the fish that you have, there has been some other threads recently about goldfish in tiny tanks have a read of these they might help.

Hi Starfish, welcome aboard.

The reason for the sooty appearance and black edges to the fins is that they are healing from some damage, probably the fin rot. The new skin is black, so it is a good sign. It will eventually become normal coloured.

They definitely need a much bigger tank than a Biorb 30, as soon as possible.

I know they need a new tank ... we were hoping to get one in a months time as we are in the throws of moving house and thought that once we moved house the fish could get a new house too!!!

I agree with Tina, Tank too small. If your moving have you considered a pond for them to live in?
