the pipe that come into your sump, do you have a filter sock on it? or does it just crash onto a sponge?

on my sump incoming pipe I have a sock full of pura phoslock for control of my phosphates .

The stuff sounds like a goodun! And apparently ok for marines and freshwater also! how long does it last/stay good for? when its in the sock/in use etc

The sock you use is it a posh proper one or an actual sock that you'd find on a foot?
