My friend has a handy supply of free MDF so i recently made a hood for my tank free of charge, it has a trim around the top with two square cuts into the top board.

I used a circular saw and a jigsaw for the more precise cuts..

I will upload some pictures when i have painted it and bought my hangdown light unit, also going to make a trim to sit on the bottom sheet of poly and chipboard.

Hi pete,
just thought I`d add my two penneth in! materials wise for hoods, WBP ply is the builders standard for any timber used in wet areas, WBP stands for water and boil proof. the vulnerable areas are the edges, thats where the water can wick up and swell the wood, so any gaps seal with silly sealant.
MDF you can get in waterresistant, they use a different resin to bind the wood pulp at manufacture, but again, as long as the bare edges are sealed, and the surfaces coated either with varnish or an oil based paint, nothing can seep in.
If you want any further advice, I did have my own carpentry business and trained as a cabinet maker, so I maybe able to help in material selection or some ideas for construction, let me know.

If i was making a bespoke tank and hood, I`d make a mould out of timber and then take a glass fibre plug from it, light and water resistant, but thats just me dreaming!!! hope you sorted your tank hood
