IMO ( in my opinion)its the syphon prosess i think that makes it work better lower down......the water's own weight and gravity moves the water from tank to filter.then the filter just pumps up hill .
The head of water is less when the filter is by the side of the tank making the pump suck and push water reducing its efficency.

the noise wase probably a airlock in the system pump head........this is less likley to happen when the filter is below the tank as the air works its way up into the tank.

I found the same it has not kept it as clear but it has kept my ammonia down, which may be a bad thing bc i dont think my plants are getting enought nitrogen so i had to order some called Flourish Nitrogen. I really dont see any fine filter media that came with mine that would keep the water clear. I think that fluval sells some polishing pads that are made for their canister filters that might help keep your water a little clearer. You might give that a try.

i use the 305's in 2 of my tanks and find them really good at keeping the water clear - one of them only gets cleaned about every 6 months, the secret i found is to purchase a couple of shower scrubbies - the screwed up balls of wirey cloth that the missus uses in the shower and squash them into the bottom section, then buy some very fine white polishing foam and place that in the top section (needs to be replaced about every 3 weeks - could be because of my sand being scattered everywhere though)the fluva polishing pads are rubbish and too thick - they slow the water flow whereas the cheaper thin foam sheet works far better.

don't know if this helps

ps down below works far better but the 305 can be a git to get all the air out of initially after cleaning - keep pumping slowly with power off then switch on and pump a few more slow ones, rattle the filter to remove any trapped air and within about 15 mins it back to almost silent

I thing them fluval filters are poo. my seals seem to wear often and the siphon process is really hard for me to get working.

i end up using my gravel siphon to get the process started.
