You shouldnt have shifted all the tanks without the proper lifting aids, trolley, lifting straps, packers, heavy duty gloves, stong biceps.

i don't mean to sound like an *^*hole but are you serious, what a post - really constuctive and positive ! the move operation took 5 hours and we were really careful, how about thinking of the disapointment on sean's face when the tank dropped rather than preaching.
where would we have got trolleys etc from - especially ones that size, the tank was so heavy it made the suspension on the transit rub.
just feel that comments like this are not necessary, sean was devastated and felt so guilty, i would have thought that people could understand that accidents happen and would be more supportive.
I had a 4ft tank split last week and when i let the guys on another forum i use know, they were all sympathetic - admittedly that tank wasn't dropped, it just split on the stand but the principle is the same - loss, disapointment etc.
Comments like this are the sort that put people off using some forums.

hope this doesn't offend the majority of users but after seeing this post i couldn't let it go without saying anything.

I can see D.R's point, when you give fish keeping gear away free it's usually cos you think you'd like to see someone get as much enjoyment out of it as you have over the time you've had it, so that more important then getting money for it all.

so yeah if you did give something away for free and it got destroyed you'd probably think it a bit wasteful. but on the other side of the coin, of course whoevers picking the tank up is also going to be wounded about damaging the tank after going to the hassle of getting to the location and making plans etc.

although i'd say dropping a tank once is an accident, dropping it twice is a lack of planning rather then an accident.

if it's too heavy for you, get another person involved! ok it might have cost you 20 quid to give a pal some drinking money for after but surely that's well worth it when your getting the tank for nowt already and its local?

other things to remember when moving big tanks... have an extra person whos not lifting (the weakest person physically) to have a few sheets of polystyrene and walk alongside the tank. if it all goes tits up and you have to put the tank down, quickly drop some poly down and rest the tank on them. good for a breather and no putting the tank corner edge on the concrete or hard surfaces..

sad that you've lost one tank, but on the positive you still have one huge tank ready for action.

Default Fluval 205 what media, what order?

Hi all,

Any advice on what is the best media to use, and in which compartments.

The filter is matured, all readings for ammonia and nitrite are 0ppm, but have always been keen to get my nitrate readings lower.

The tank is well looked after, cleaned on a regular basis, 30% w/c once a week.

The media I have in at the moment are as follows, starting from bottom tray

Bottom tray- filter wool and biomax rings

Middle tray- Biomax rings

Top tray - biomax rings

slotted slip in shallow tray- more filter wool

I was thinking to keep the mid tray just bio rings, the bottom tray put one of those plastic body scrunchies you use in the shower, then leave the top trays clear?
My concern with havin too much media is creating a nitrate factory within the cannister?

Your advice, or what do you use?

Thanks everyone xx

You are perfectly entitled to your opinion Harris, this is a forum afterall. If it offends you that much I'll delete my post.

My post was to emphasize the need for extreme caution when shifting large tanks like this. You can never be too careful.

The OP'er has already expressed his disappointment, I can only imagine his dismay, to which I do sympathize.......

having said that can you imagine the look of disappointment if you had done your back in or it had dropped on someones foot, or shards of glass embedded in someone,

Do you know what weight the bare tank was?
You mentioned that the vans suspension was rubbing (I doubt you were anywhere near the max payload for a transit) that in itself would send alarm bells ringing.

I can tell you now, that I would'nt have even contemplated lifting the tank without lifting aids.

I am always willing to give sound advice on the forum, even if another member does not like what is said,
Re your tank split, thats a diff scenario, if you were local I would be round with my silicone gun to mend the seam.

In response to this thread I even asked webmaster to open a sub-section especially for this type of topic, moving tanks, where I would give some useful input.
