I found my external when some dude dumped a 5 foot marine tank locally with all the bits. loads of ocean rock, external, protein skimmer. it is a bodger but it does the job, the primer has busted off so it cuts me every time i use it. i have to put Vaseline around the seal every time to stop it leaking! lol

I'm not familiar with this particular eheim but 99% of the time its the rubber gasket I would try and buy a replacement direct from eheim it will be much cheaper.

In the short term position the intake for the filter close to the surface of the water this will prevent the tank emptying in the event of a power failure but the tank will empty what ever is above the intank for the filter so you will still get a flood but 2 gallons is far better than 20 or whatever the size of tank you have.

Also have a look around the top of the filter at the gasket is there any damage or debris on the gasket even a few grains of sand can cause a slow leak.

Personally I would take the filter apart wash the gasket and check it for damage (has it go any cracks etc) also check the slot the gasket fits in is there any debris there if so remove it.

Then cover the gasket in silicon gel if you have it other wise vaseline is sufficient and then put it all back to gether being careful to locate everything properly doing this will hopefully solve your problem.

Alan

Great suggestion about putting the in-take higher up to prevent the tank emptying. It's 80 Gallons.

Cheers pal, great contribution to the thread
