Thats exactly what I've done now to be honest. So off to get a new air stone and some stone for the bottom tomorrow and I'll fire it up. Hopefully everything will work, I bought all new filters and a new pump (needed new shaft adn impeller and there wasn't much difference between that and teh whole thing so I bought it all to be sure). So fingers crossed I'll be able to add a couple of fish before too long.
Thanks for all of your help.
Oh and yes it does seem that hagen are now Fluval because all the new parts have fluval on them.

While cleaning it I noticed a few things had gone walkies. One of the things I've noticed that I can seem to get a replacement for is a hollow tube that used to go from the bottom of the pump head down into the bottom of the biolife casing. I can't find a spare part number for that anywhere. I'm assuming it served a sensible purpose when it was there (a guess it made the pump suck from the bottom of the tank rather than just from the surface). Does anybody have one of these spare or know where I can get one? What difference will there be if I can't get one? Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Podman, i have a Fluval BIOLIFE filter suitable for upto 200 litres I`ve had a look in the users manual, if its the same thing, the part number it states is A-13906, the tube is 170mm long diameter 19mm, thickness of plastic 1.5mm.
Is this what you need?

Yes that was the part number, they didn't have one, said it was discontinued. Luckily I managed to find something which may actually even be the lost part (fits so perfectly, might have just got mixed up.) That information would have been very useful if I'd had it at the time. Thanks for looking it up for me.
Beginning to wonder if the biolife is such a good idea or if I should be thinking of changing it, looks like you gotta spend out on changing filters etc quite often. Anybody know a cheaper alternative that works as well or better?

bio-life filters are ok! but there are better ways, externals, or even the good ol fashioned undergravel, the main prob with bio-lifes is the amount of space they take up in the tank

advantage of the biolife is that it's neat I guess, no tubes hanging out the tank etc.
Bit late to go back to an under gravel one now too, tank is up and running with a few fish in there to cycle it.
Just wondered if there was another similar item that was cheaper to keep running.

I know what you mean! the media can be expensive, but guess that is the case with any filter system. I ran my first tank up fishless, doing away with the carbon pad, (boy they are expensive!) only used these if chemicals needed removing from the tank water, and keeping an eye on the prefilter foam, cleaning it with aquarium water regular,( these last a long time, longer than the 2-4 mnths they advise for replacement) any decomposing plant bits etc not good for biomax and the bacteria, they like clean water passing over them.
I have an external Fluval filter now, that has more capacity for the bacteria, and doesnt take up room in the tank.
