Default Placement of external filters

I read something today an another forum that got me thinking, it's kind of obvious, but apparently if you place the filter directly underneath the tank this is the worst place for maximising the flow / power of the filter as it's fighting directly against gravity?

Is there any physicists amongst us apart from Dave?

yep tis right! the lower the filter the more more head flow is required so you will lose some efficiency,i always try to place my externals level with the bottom of tank or maybe slightly higher, just make sure the filter isnt above water surface level

Question

Fluval say their filters are supposed to be below the tank, cos they work on gravity feed into it, and only use the motor to pump the water back into ythe tank.
Or am I missing summat as usual?

i have been sat on the fence after reading this about position Dave!

i can see both ideas and that if the filter is higher then its less effort for the pump to return. all pumps have a maximum head and the greater the head = less flow.
and thinking about it once the syphon is started it will be fine aslong as the filter inlet is lower thn the tank outlet. ( am i making any sense?)
And Filter below the tank will make the initial syphon process work easyer ( but only to start)

didnt someone ask this question last month about placing his filter at the back of his tank not beneath and he was told to place it beneath . because they are gravity fed .or have I imagined this
