For some reason i never got all messages and just got them all there just now.

I actually have three heaters plugged in and in the tank at the moment.

I will buy a good thermometer tomorrow and see how i get on.

I am finding it all very strange to be honest. As are the fish shop!!!

I have not been waterchanging while treating the tank, the treatment does not say anything about water changes, so advice on this would be welcomed!!!

I read that water changes removes some free swimmers but then i thought it would reduce the meds effectiveness.

To be honest its all confusing and the more i read, the more i worry, the more i get confused. lol

Neil there should not be a need to run carbon in a filter long term( its better to just use it after medicating or in between medications to remove the first before treating the second ( if that makes any sense)sounds like your only chemicly filtering!!!

What you idealy need is some good bio filter media ( usualy very porus ceramic tubes or grit like stuff) this will be your biological filtering !

get a coarse open cell sponge and carefuly cut a slot/hole in it big enough to put over the strainer in your tank, this will be a pre filter and catch any solids/uneaten food preventing it from going into your filter( you can remove this and wash under the tap daily with no harm to your bio filtering!)

you dont realy want to be turning filters off. fill it full of media and run it 24-7

if you needed to waterchange while using medication it is important to calculate the % of medication needed to keep the dosage at the recomended level ,otherwise your treating at a diluted dose and wasting your time.

What type of external are you running? I might have a spare sponge for your intake. Been used on Eheim Classics and Eco's

I bought two thermometers the other day, out of the eight that was on display ,only these two gave the same reading some of the others were way out, and as for the two they were replacing, one would not go over 65f and the other 68f. also I am running my new tank at the moment ( 6ft + 4ft sump )with one 300watt heater . I will put a back up in before I introduce any fish. temp at moment 78f

as I said you can have trouble with the cheapies as well, so do as I, do pull them all off and check one against the other when buying(more chance that a couple giving the same reading are the correct ones. )
