Exclamation Fish Euthanasia.

Last week we put a end to one of our Oranda baby goldfish. He was one of the babys that we had breed ourselvs so kinda special.
Being the runt of the 5 that we were left with.He always swam different to the others he never grew the right shape and in the end would spend time near the surface upside down ,Righting himself when you walked past and swimming normal.
Last week i returned home to find him missing a eye and not looking good. I took the decision to step into God's shoes and controll when and how he would pass over to the fish heaven!

Had a pet talk with the wife as its her department ( fancy fish) and opted for something i had read on another forum.

some would probably have culled him earlyer but we like to give him as long as sensable.

I brought home from the chemists Clove Oil
diluted 8 drops clove oil into a old drinks bottle with water mixed well!
placed the little one in a icecream tub and added the mix.
watched his breething slow as the oil started to put him to sleep. i added some more oil and he passed away peacefully. to make sure i added the remainder of the oil.

Never Easy but if we are responsable about out pets then we do the right thing by them!

Just thought i would pass this method on for others !

Robert

Yes Rob, i have used the clove oil method in the past and did quite a bit of research on it. I used mine with a tiny bit of vodka as the alcohol helps the clove oil disolve into the water properly. I was sufficiently satisfied from the research on the net and chatting to others on forums that the small amount of alcohol does not increase the suffering of the fish and it can allow the clove oil to work more effectively.

I believe its best practice to freeze the fish after the clove oil (or otherwise ensure it is completely dead), as if you dont use enough clove oil, the fish can actually come "back to life" at some point.

You opted for the most humane method and did your research to find the best method.

You did something that is never easy to do but by the sound of it you did the right thing.

Rob i have used the same method before on a fancy goldfish and although it's not nice i believe it is the most humane way if there really is no hope.

How sad for you both, I always wondered the most humane way to end a fishes life if it was suffering, I`m sure one day I may have to use this method.
P.s clove oil can be used for toothache in humans, ala dentist scene in marathon man.
