Alan, there is a formula for working out how much heat loss (in terms of wattage) that occurs in a fish tank, you just need the full dimensions of the tank, the desired tank temp and the average room temp in a 24 hr period. I got it off a spreadsheet designed by someone on PFK, i can't swear by it, but they guy appeared to know his maths quite well!

It wont necessarily be 100% but should be pretty close as it depends on the efficiency of the heater (and how much of the electricity the heater turns directly into heat)

Hey Grandad

Earlier on Alan mentioned about 7p per KW/h or eleccy, i know he said it was a rough figure, but just to let peeps know, from what i have looked at, 11p per KW/h seems more normal (shows how much eleccy has gone up in last year or so ). My 11p figure takes into account the average cost of a KW/h unit over the course of a quarter (3 months)

Here's what i make of the cost of your set-up Grandad

Daily Cost

Heating: 26p (would be higher but you mentioned about your room temp)

Lights: 30p (includes sump lights)

Skimmer: 10p

Powerheads: 93p (includes sump pump)

TOTAL: £1.59 daily

go for a fixed price energy supplier and it pays i think to go with better known makes with lower wattages as soons adds up during year especially as they reckon energys going up by about 35% by end of the year

Im glad I am on a fixed price sumo, with my three tanks its got to work out over a hundred just for them otherwise .

Not sure if you guys have ever heard or seen these gadgets, they plug into individual items or you can get ones that monitor your total electrical consumption. Take a look for yourselves,( I just typed in "electrical consumption monitors into the search engine) they may help to give you a definitive cost for consumption on each individual heaters, pumps etc.
