i love marine set-up's but have never had one, there's too many different species of trops i want to try, i will never do marine until i do discus, no matter what peeps say about discus (some say they are boring), they will always be my dream, just see Robert Pope's thread for more evidence of the wonder's of discus
Fry Lover's Dreams (no particular order)
1. Discus set-up
2. Breeding Oscar pair
3. Huge Malawi set-up (at least 7x2x2)

I`ve seen some Discus today, they are rather lovely. Are they difficult to keep, do they require specific environment? could I give them a go?

I would love that too. Get as big a tank as my house (and wallet) would take and fill it with little malawis about 1 or 2". 100's of them and just watch them grow.

I'll let Pope-Action answer that one Sally, he is Dr Discus!
There's some good sites on Discus, i try to steer clear, or i get too tempted.
For me its the whole environment, i would not do the bare tank look, unless i got real serious about breeding, i just want them in a tank, big tank with loads of plants, maybe if a pair form, i would take them out and try to breed them in a different tank.
Ideally you would have soft water with a pH of below 7.0, so for me that would mean RO, and RO up's the stakes for me, thats a whole new ball game

need reassurance!
Hey FL,
Another few questions for you! sorry to bug you at this time of night.
just tested water
Ammonia 0.25 (just a tinge of green)
Nitrite 0ppm how can that come down so fast, overnight it seems?
Nitrate 20ppm
Ph still no change
How and why is this happening so fast? I havent changed anything, no water changes nothing added, other than the prawns as you suggested yesterday.
I did turn up the water temp after reading the link about fishless cycling and using ammonia drops, and the water is quite vigorously aerated, but all that has not changed since the first day of setup. Dont get me wrong, I`m proper chuffed, but it doesnt seem to be following the rules!!

it doesnt make sense the Nitrate went from 120 to 20, unless you did about a 80% water change or something!
Although nitrate kits are unreliable,
You might be ready to rock and roll Sally, i mean how many days you been cycling now?
You can bug me anytime of the night, oooooooooooooooohhhhh
