Non man made cock up led to 2 man made cock ups !
6ft Piranha tank cracked without us knowing, went away for a weekend and returned to a paddling pool in our living room...... forunately Piranha's survived in the foot of water remaining....
Rescued Piranha's, started drying carpet etc fixed crack ran hose pipe into the tank to refill...... I was out when hubby did this.... daft hubby got lured by the xbox and forgot the hose.... cock up and paddling pool number 2
Number 3 cock up, under-estimating how high a piranha can jump leading to a nice chunk missing from hubbys arm and me falling about laughing!
Thankfully all the piranha's survived and are doing well.. Husband still has the scar tho !

Another cock up due to lack of experience and a LFS that was more interested in sales than anything else...
We had just got a 4ft tank and decided that Cichlids look nice so we would have them... we purchased a few and all was going well...... wanted to add some more... so we went to the LFS and spotted these really cute little striped cichlids on special offer, were assured they would go great in our tank so we purchased 6.... wasnt long before 6 became 60 flipping convicts! breed like bunnies and no one wants them! we gave them away in mass! and returned the orginals to the shop!
there is a lot to be said about doing research BEFORE buying fish!

Only two, came down one moring to find 2 X 4ft tropical fresh water tanks had both emptied themselves over the floor, biggest argument with insurance company bar none for a new carpet.
second was in the pond, fed the fish early before wandering off to work, everything seemed ok, steaming hot day, came home all the fish doing the backstroke, at some point the pump had packed up and due to the very high temperature the O2 level obviously dropped.

Please excuse me jumping in when you asked someone else a question but I have just altered my insurance to cover accidents (after the big tank sprung a leak!)
For the small tank, 3ft, we didnt need to take out any extra insurance and it is covered under the standard insurance, the big tank 6ft, wasnt covered on the grounds that the value to be replaced is over £1000 if you include everything... apparently, anything over a £1000 has to be added on to the insurance as an extra premium hence ours is now valued at £999.99
As for the carpet, thats only covered if we take out accidental cover with an added liability cover which put a lot more on the premium
But, if by chance, I dropped a tin of paint all over the carpet and needed to claim for a new one.. that would be covered by the basic accidental damabe cover we have...
May or may not help you but, thats my experience! would be good to hear others to see if I need to find a new insurer!

Hi Donna
Thanks for the input.
I've already had close to 300 litres on the laminate flooring in my lounge and have had a couple of near misses in the bedroom too (50 odd litres made a break for it one night)
My flooring and carpet has already been hammered, every time it dries out, i mamage to have another "moment", lol
I happened to be home when 300 litres came to the floor! But my concern is if my 5x2x2 smashes, i will have about 450 litres to deal with, not so much worried about the flooring, it's the stuff that may or may not be on the floor (my PC tower is based on the floor for one). I've also got some other electrical equipment that isn't that far from the tank.
My policy basically says i am not covered for damage caused by domestic pets, i have accidental damage as an extra premium, but i think i will make enquiries.
I wonder if my Eheim external filters are covered as general electrical items in terms of accidental damage? I doubt it

Fry Lover...
Just a suggestion, but you know those plastic tub things that are used for underbed storage etc? grab one of them and sit your PC in it! thats where mine lives, just to be safe !!! anything electrical on the floor near my tanks gets sat in one of them or on a plastic tray depending which tank its near!
The filter on my policy IS covered if it gets stolen, damaged by an act of god, broken by accident... but ISN'T covered if the tank leaks on it and fries it... To be perfectly honest, all insurance companies can find loopholes to say your not covered and add on further charges.
You say your policy doesnt cover damage by domestic animals... but you could argue that it wasnt a domestic animal that did the damage.. well unless you have a fish with a sledge hammer and an attitude that smashed your tank! It may be worth calling them and telling them you WANT your carpet etc covered for tank leakage or breakages
Zurich is supposed to offer a good insurance for aquariums but as mine doesnt need renewing yet I havent looked into it, I dont know of anywhere that insures just the aquariums... definate space in the market there!

Cheers Donna
Useful info, yeh, i did wonder the way my policy is worded "damaged caused by domestic pets", my fish would not cause my tank smashing, thats all down to dumb-a$$ me most likely! I am going to ask my insurance company about this.
Will look into Zurich.
Maybe my fish will be entitled to some "no claims bonus"

Sorry lex to take so long answering.
At the time the insurance cmpnay sed that a fish tank is not classified as a water storage system, therefore the policy did nt cover the damage, however aftera lot of arguing and even more cussing and swearing they agreed to make a "nominal" payout, which turned out to about hundrec quid less than we originally claimed.
At the time we wewre actually quite chuffed because the carpet was already in the house when we moved in and although an axminster was looking very tired, so we did in fact end up getting the new carpet we had already ordered for nowt.
Sum may call it divine providence i called being lucky? for once.
As an aside quite a few of the fish were still flapping in the morning and they were all successfully rehoused with my cousin
