If your local aquatic store sells RO water (Reverse Osmosis)then this would be better than using the chemical adativs to lower the ph.
my friend breeds at a ph of 6.8
As Ray says you need to know your water

Kh = carbonated hardness
Gh = General hardness
TDS = Total disolved solids

Please note this is not from a Discus site its from turtles but it explains about the PH / KH / GH and use of RO water!

(from what i understand if your water is to hard then the eggs form to hard a skin thus the males milt can not fertalise the egg)
