Hmmm

One thing I forgot to mention is the eating pattern

Before purchasing the Koi my fish were feeding a lot. The minute the food went in it was being eaten immediatly with all of them coming up at the same time to feed.

Now when I feed its a much slower ordeal. Some of them come up eventually but not like they did before, and this is all of them that are in the pond, ie shubs, goldfish. When I see them come up they look ok and do feed, just not as voraciously as before but a part of me is wondering if thats anything to do with the Heron scaring them maybe?

There have been no more deaths so what do we think I should do? Should I buy a general tonic/treatment type of thing just to perk them up? Should I wait and see? If I ring the fish shop I cant imagine them being honest and stating they sold me diseased fish, I could be wrong there but I just cant see it?

BTW just want to add, this is a great site/forum and I really appreciate the replies!

Forgot to mention also.

A few hours before a couple of the Koi died, they were swimming alone and pretty slowly, quite lethargic, I knew then they were on the way out. I can usually tell by looking at my fish if there is a problem, you can just tell cant you. Apart from those 2 the others showed no sign at all, sort of like 10am swimming around, 11am floating type of scenario.

by phoning the shop they may be on the defencive, however if you could go in face to face and strike up convasation ,not just go in for the "you sold me fish and they are all dead" type statment.

talk with them and explain your concern regarding a shipment of fish they have had and you bought from. and to check with their suplyers etc.We are lucky that our local fish shop has fantastic customer service.

If no customers complain they they are none the wiser. if they have had others then they may take note and act! worth a try.

feeding they will probably be shy/spooked after the heron

Sadly very few aquarist centers will be happy to admit that they have a problem with their fish, especialy one that has a large number of outlets across the country, (bearing in mind that they probably purchase their stock from one supplier). Any rumour of fish being suplied from them with the KHV virus will cause extensive damage to their trade.
( it might be a good idea to remove their name from this topic) Guys I am not trying to tell you what to do, but having dealt with one solo dealer ( who was selling fish with parasites) who got upset when he was named and shamed , any mention of KHV linked to a UK wide dealership may cause the forum problems.

I have a topic on KHV on my forum that will give anyone that is interested as much info as they need , sadly it wont let me copy all the pics with the info to here, so if you are interested , just pm me and I will forward it to you.

Mrtinson as mentioned in the start of this post, sadly it is difficult to explain why your koi died , idealy if someone was around that could have scraped and scoped them we would have had a better idea.

This is one thing to look out for, that is a grade 1 notification that something is wrong , fish when ill act like humans they do not want people around them, that is the time to ask for help.

No problem Mrtinson, sadly dealers dont mind when you naming them when there is praise going, but some can get funny when there are problems with fish bought from them. So I tend to er on the safe side .

D.R

If seven of them are 6-8 inches, then yes they are youngsters in Koi world, but they are not exactly tiny FISH (Koi or whatever) especially added along with 13 other unknown sized fish?

If the water hadn't cycled properly and you added 20 fish it's going to play up with your parims. It's just general knowledge! Especially if your new to ponds or keeping fish altogether! As we all know!

To the OP - Yep you've cleared up some questions. As Merlin says though sometimes what is within the 'ideal' range isn't ideal. Your water may be ok, but post them parims up so we can help you further!

I just didn't want you to make the same mistake we ALL have done at some stage or another, saying the water is OK when we don't really know or think it could be something else, as its very common and unfortunately often a contribruting factor! I know I learned the hard way as did many others, just how much water parims can effect your fish, even if slightly off or on the high end, and after all, we are here to help you and your fish!!!!

Best of luck with the pond.

If these are the largest fish, I don't see any reason for concern, if they were 2-3ft that would be a different story.
Neither am I saying to any newcomer to dump 20 fish straight into a pond. Although this is possible if you know what you are doing.

if there was NH3 or NO2 detected I would say dont feed for the next 7-10 days

This pond has been setup for 3 months so it should have gone through the nitrogen cycling (6 weeks normally for coldwater)

Reading the post again, as they are all koi, then it could be Koi Herpes virus??
