I have heard of this happening with juwel tanks the strut is attached to a plastic rim that goes around the top of the tank and can be replaced contact juwel and they should be able to send a replacement that should just clip on to the top of the tank.

Don't bother mucking about with adding glass struts until you have spoken to juwel I have heard that sometimes they will just dish out a feee tank even if it is outside the gaurantee.
