nice idea grandad
i will mull this over ......as it could give some members the fun/upset of discus keeping . however it costs as much to feed a runt/ bad un as it does a good one! if ya know what i mean.
i think we should where possable only raise fish of good quality .
when i first enterd the discus milarky i thought spawns of 100 + every couple of weeks £££££££££ someone's on the make .i now find out those 100-200 spawns are often heavy culled down to 30 or so best fish.
i knew i should have kept convicts lol.
i can go into a bit more about the breeding and culling and i know some breeders cull healthy fish just because they have the wrong number of bars on their side.
more about that later if anyone is intrested.

as long as the fish are healthy , and whoever had them, didnt breed from them I cant see any problem in keeping them ( maybe im entirely wrong and just a softy at heart lol)

Odd one Rob,as your first batch were fine I doubt it is genetic, more likley causes are a defficiany in their diet,or an infection,I would try a dip in FMG or the interpet finrot has worked for me,can you get the Stenker beefheart in my opinion its the best food for young fish.Rearing deformed fish is pointless as nobody will want them and they rarely do very well, culling is something that all Discus breeders must do as the strains usually throw a large amount of poor youngsters, which are practically impossible to sell or even give away,a lot of people think there is money to be made in breeding but in fact you just about break even if you work out the cost and labour involved, chin up fella if Discus were easy there would be no point in keeping them lol.

thanks ray for the supporting words.i also think its a bacterial thing that attacked the young early either still in the egg or as first free swimming.
the first batch i had ver nice shape these are deformed so i think it will be viable to get some babys from this pair.
and i know its ment to be difficult to be a discus breeder.is that not part of the challenge?
i cand see grandads point as he is a hearty loving guy! weather its a right or wrong thing to do im keeping a open mind.
Thanks to those that have offerd to take some of the fry off me i will be in contact

If I was you I'd cull them and be done with it. They aren't any where near good enough quality so save the time, effort and money for a more promising batch.
I can see why people want to take them from you, but it really is best to prevent any weak or deformed stock from entering the hobby.

I agree with Rob c, but its hard do it,I bought a batch of young fish in Feb as some of you will know, there were several fish that were poor quality but I put them in a tank of their own and tried to rear them, the last one died 5 days ago,in the future I will not let sentiment get in the way as none of those fish really had any quality of life, cruel to be kind!this is something that every breeder has to be aware of.

That is common practice among breeders of many fish, such as fancy goldfish. They are culled if they do not conform to the breed standard, even if they are healthy. It seems like a shame, but it is better to keep a few fish and give them more space and food than to keep hundreds of fish.
In my opinion as long as they are not suffering or weak, it is up to the breeder whether to keep them or not. If they are obviously struggling to survive, there is no point in keeping them as it will prolong their suffering and be a disappointment to future owners.
