Default help

hi,i have recenly had a pair of discus in a 5ft tank which have layed eggs at least 6 times,but each time the eggs just go white fungused?i know there a pair i have watched them do the process,i thought the male my be in fertile so i have replaced them for another pair but i am having the same problem,so im wondering if it could be my water conditions that are causing the eggs to go fungus? or im i being stupid?

I think it is more likely to be hard water that is the problem,but unless you can test the KH,GH or the TDS I cant really advise you,but a PH 0f 7 is too high for Discus to breed,although some people claim to have done this.

If your local aquatic store sells RO water (Reverse Osmosis)then this would be better than using the chemical adativs to lower the ph.
my friend breeds at a ph of 6.8
As Ray says you need to know your water

Kh = carbonated hardness
Gh = General hardness
TDS = Total disolved solids

have a look here it shows how they relate to one another!
http://www.chelonia.org/Articles/waterchemistry.htm

Please note this is not from a Discus site its from turtles but it explains about the PH / KH / GH and use of RO water!

(from what i understand if your water is to hard then the eggs form to hard a skin thus the males milt can not fertalise the egg)

Please dont use that PH stuff it causes havoc with the water chemistry,if you are serious about breeding these fish you will need to make water of a suitable hardness and PH,to do this in hard water areas an reverse osmosis unit is essential,do some research on the net there's loads of info on there.Also a 5 foot tank is very big for breeding a 18 inch cube is the most usual size.A 5 footer would be good for a grow out tank though.

Default ro water

i have added some ro water to the tank and the pair have spawned again,but this time there are 8 batches of eggs across the tank is this normal for 1 pair of discus to lay so many batches?

No it's not, discus usualy only lay one batch, I'm no expert but the size of the tank may be causing this.
