To be honest i at first only did weekly waterchanges as i only had the 2 in a comunity tank with compatable fish!
you would be better to do more if you can as the fish will reward you in return!
in my opinion many of us buy small fish as its what we can afford and like the idea of growing them on.
For discus to grow then they need plenty of high protin food something like beef-heart/Ox-heart fed 3 or more times a day! all this food will soon polute your tank either from being passed through the fish as waste or from un-eaten/rotting food.
you idealy want to remove the uneaten food and fish waste every day after feeding and the easy way is to syphon! then top up with new water!
i was told by a very experienced breeder/keeper to do as many water changes as what felt comftable to my living ..........he went on its no good pulling your hair out trying to waterchange every day if your not enjoying the fish! he was convinced once you enjoy your fish you do more waterchanges !
depending on what you want to keep ? where its situated and what you want to get out of it all comes down to a personal choice
Ray waterchanges every day with his discus and i do 3 weekly .
if your tank is in the right position and of a big enough size you could set up a auto top up......and then you only have to do the syphoning ??
