by the way - really wasn't trying to sound like a pretentious prat in my last post, just thought it may be a different view that could be of intrest.

harris, fair point, but if you follow that, you would not keep guppies, modern angelfish, modern discus, platies, fancy goldfish, koi, swordtails, and numerous other popular species as these are all line bred for colour and form.

It all comes down to personal taste - in my mind they are still living fish to care for.

Valid point, didn't really think about that, back when i did tropicals i was as guilty as the next man. as you said they are still living fish and could make an attractive addition to a tank, its all down to personal taste and what you want from a tank, in reality i guess its not so different from hybrids and before i managed to obtain the correct species female for my hongi he spawned with anything he could and created some fantastic looking fry, hongi and yellow lab is amazing looking, but through the choices i made with my tanks i gave all the fry away as didn't want to start bringing hybrids into the tank.
In an evolutionary sense i suppose all malawi have been hybridised or selectively bred (through their own choice) to create the wide variety out there.
