Well after owning and keeping fish for around 20 years I am back to where I started.

Coldwater fish may be cheap and cheerful but they are a great novelty. Some of them were even adopted from unwanted homes.

Tame as well, the fish always come to greet you when you approach the tank (must be something to do with all the live daphnia they get)

Prize for whoever spots the fry

The fish have butchered my Java fern LOL

Excuse the bubble wrap, but it does keep the tank insulated and prevents rapid heat loss/gain.

Thanks peeps!
You are right TC, some fish are expensive, you'll not see them in my tank lol.
Having said that, they are a picture of health, thats what matters. They constantly cruise back and forward along the glass and spawned several times last autumn.
Well spotted Tasha, its only an ickle fish, still dark colours.

Great tank D.R.
I like goldfish and most of mine are rescues too.
Did the fry come from a spawning in the tank?

Thanks, yes I have a few fry from the lemon commons. Despite a partition to separate the breeding pair, most of the eggs were consumed by the adults. I would arrive home from work only to find they had spawned in my absence. The java moss is an ideal refuge for the last remaining fry. The moss is a bit unkept at the moment lol. I have to weed it out every few months lol.

nice to see your set-up D.R

what kind of filtration are you using?

Undergravel?

Yeah UG, keeps my water crystal clear and I'm not overly fussy about frequent water changes. I dont want a high maintenance tank, I have been there and got the T-shirt with Marines and stuff.
Nitrates reach the normal 40ppm after several months. Its simple and effective, its works for me.

I have had all the internal/external canister filters, they do their job but they are extremely over-rated (In my humble opinion ).

UG prevents any static water movement in the gravel that would otherwise occur in power filter set-ups. This has the advantage of full water and sediment (gravel) recirculation, important when treating a tank with remedies or general water conditioners.

I dont feed the fish for one day in the week, this causes them to graze on any algae (plenty in my tank). They also forage around in the gravel, some bioturbation works wonders for the filter bed.

I have tried the cold water algae eaters, although they seem to graze on the microscopic rotifers/protozoa found in the algae, rather than the green stuff itself.

Some of the fry when they were 7 days.

There are only about 50 fry in the pic, the rest of the orange dots are daphnia. The live daphnia have come through the back of the partition when the adults were being fed.

The week old fry were chasing the daphnia lol, quite a novelty to watch, they were about a third of the size of the daphnia.

The white disc shaped thing in the pic is not a UFO, its my lamp shade reflection lol
