Default garden turtles/terrapins?

Ok im probably going to get shot down. Can you keep a turtle or terrapin outside in a garden pond?

I have to ask because i dont know ???.

what i do know is there is a turtle/terrapin in our local cannal all big and healthy.
They have one in the Buddhist temple in London and at Burford wildlife park nr Oxford they have loads in a lake.

We have just been given a fiberglass pond and was wondering if it could house a outdoor turtle?dont think we need more fish as we have 4 tanks in the house

It All Depends On What Type And The Size Popey, Most Of The Turtles/terrapins You See In Local Ponds/ Lakes Are Red Or Yellow Sliders, Theres Loads Of Em In The Pond A Few Hundred Yards From Me,when Young You Can Keep Em Outside In A Green House With A Pond, They Do Need To Come Out To Bask, If You Do Go For It, Make Sure Theres A 12" Wall Around The Pond To Stop Em Wandering, Also Rats + Various Birds Have Been Known To Feast On Em So Bare That In Mind Too,adults Will Be Fine...

hi the terrapins would be ok in the pond all summer, but when it comes to winter you either have to bring them in doors or make sure the pond is really deep so they can hibernate at the bottom, ive seen some in the past frozen on the side of the pond, and this was a reptile specialist who should have known better...good luck, ive got 4 large terrapins who live in a heated indoor pond and they are active all year round

dont give up on them, they are brilliant little creatures to watch, mine can be hand fed,the only down side is they make alot of mess,go for a good filtration system, keep on with the idea,if you want terrapins ,go to a rescue centre,as long as you can prove you have a good home waiting for them, they will give them to you for a small donation
