Default Grandad on tortoises

I remember many years ago ,when I was a boy, you could buy a tortoise, from a pet shop , or the market , for about a shilling ( five pence) all the kids would buy them , take them home , feed them lettuce and dandelion leaves, make sure they had water . Winter came put the tortoise in a box,, and then put them out in the shed to hibernate ,spring came ,out to the shed we would go ,look in the box , remove dead tortoise? ,bury dead tortoise?, and then its off to the market, to buy another one.this went on year in and year out .we did not have a clue how to look after these animals and they paid for our ignorance in their millions. thank god its not like that now. tortoises are now reassuringly expensive and most owners take the time and effort to find out all they can about caring and nurturing them.(as we fishkeepers try to do). If I wanted someone to look after my tortoise I would expect them to have a vast knowledge of their needs ,have a EXCELLENT veterinary service available to them and be kind and caring to these peaceful gentle animals.
