i had a look on Google, well it's an Eheim at the end of the day, so is probably "good", but it's one of their smaller one's Pete, the specs indicate its a bit of a "baby" of an external, i see the on-line price range is about £70, you may want to consider the extra £30 to £40 you could spend and get a filter thats quite a bit bigger and more powerful.

Have you considered Tetratec 1200 by the way? Check that one out, i keep hearing good things about it.

Actually i think the Tetratec is also in the £70 range. As much as i like Eheim, if i wass going to spend £70 to £80 on an external tomorrow i would go Tetratec 1200, if my budget was in the £100 to £150 range, i would be strongly considering Eheim

I got a couple of these 2224 Eheim filters.

They are pretty reliable & do the job.

I do have a few niggles though.

Firstly, once you take it apart, clean it out & put it together, getting the water flowiing through properly & all the trapped air out isn't exactly the quickest job. Seem to end up holding the filter on an agle for at least 10 minutes then slowly trying to get the filter to its upright position.

This could be me doing it wrong though.

Secondly, there are a few diferent types of the 2224 floating about.
I have 2, they look the same, but one has a built in heater element in the bottom, which is really cool as it means I got less wires going in the top of my tank. I'd go for that one.

Good luck

Regards

E

Go with eheim but if you are worried about omph go for the model above that necessary for you tank.

Personally after my experience with fluvals I will not touch them again I have had tank wipeouts thanks to jammed impellors and warped impellor housings as well as spontaneous leaks that cannot be fixed pressumably due to wear in the housing meaning it can't clampdown effectively I can't comment on the FX5 but I would not trust an eheim as far as I could throw one. Just my opinion though.

check ebay you may be able to pick up a bargain I just bought an eheim aquarium plus an eheim 2222 plus a jagar heater all for £100 there are bargains out there.

As far as restarting any external goes it is much easier if you have a means of keeping the outflow pipe from the tank (the in to the filter) full of water. Providing you can maintain the siphon starting any external filter is a doddle.

With the eheim pro filters the bit that attaches to the filter has 2 taps on it makes sure the out put pipe from the pump (the in to the tank) is drained first then release the water from the tank outlet (the in to the filter). This should maintain the siphon.

I have never had a problkem with this with eheims but no end of trouble with fluvals invariably I get the thing filled up with water then I turn it on and nothing happens because the impellor has jammed. To fix a fluval impellor jam normally hitting the top of it with a fist (basically thump it) in a downward motion seems to kick the impellors into gear.

Fluvals make a racket normally when they start too eheims are virtually silent and in my experience start first time every time. Just my experience and opinion though I know some people think they are fantastic value for money and they are right up until the point they go wrong.

Hi Alan

I would beg to differ with your comment about getting the flow started again.

The 2224 has the taps for both inlet & outlet, thats not a problem.

The problem is once the impellor chamber is empty, lets say because of a clean out.
Once you put it all back together, the pipes are full & so is the filter housing, but the pump/ impellor housing is empty, so you get trapped air, which slowly dissipates as you jiggle it about for about 10 minutes or so.

I have to say though that what I did this time round was before I put the 2 pipes back on to the filter, I stuck a funnell in & filled up the impellor housing with water from the tank, in an attempt to avoid trapped air.

It was quicker, but still not the quickest.

regards

E
