Default Mechanical Filtration for externals

I use Eheim 2026 and 2028's but the question can apply to other externals, you can just ignore the "eheim" brand part

What's the most effective/efficient mechanical media

If you vote "other" please state what it is.

Also has anyone used option 2, i have it, what do people think of it?

Also, any other comments, tips, advice welcome

Here are some links to the choices

Smile

Also, can peeps post what they are currently using, regardless of what they think is best.

Thanks

PS - remember this is about mechanical filtration only, although i appreciate nitrifying bacteria will also colanise on mechanical media, but in less numbers.

all my externals run with alfagrog, marines i use alfagrog/live rock rubble mix, sometimes i use filter wool just to catch the minute particles...also whack in the odd bag of no2/no3/phos special media in times of need, of these the best ive found was fluval greenx[cheap too], but i have used seachem anti nitrate + anti phos ...

well i have voted for the Ehfi Fix

i dont think many peeps know about this or use it and you have to hunt it down a bit on Google, but i ordered some a while back and when i opened it, i thought "what the heck is this", its kind of like really coarse green plastic string.

I completely filled the bottom eheim tray on some of my 2028's a while back, whenever i went into the filter (about every 10-12 weeks), this stuff still "looked" clean, so i wondered if it was actually doing anything.

But tonight, i actually took it out and rinsed it in tap water in a small bucket to see what came out, and the water was almost black!!

Well it's Eheim after all, they know what they are doing, i am going to stick with this stuff at the bottom of my filters, it seems to catch much more cr*p than other mechanical media i have used.
