Default plumbing in new fish house

Just bit of advice needed for settimg up a central filter system in my new fish house for breeding discus as due to large no. of tanks in house i think missus is applying for divorce.

i have at present 3, 4'x2'x2' tanks, 4 18 inch cubes for breeding, 4 4'x18"x18" and 2 3'x18x15.

thinking of putting all tanks except breeding tanks on central filter system but plumbing is not my forte.

any advice on how to set it up types of pump, valves etc to use. All tanks are drilled already

many thanks delboy

Its easy mate . you just need to decide where your central filter is going to go decide how your tanks will be laid out . then do a sketch of pipework that will enable you to join all tanks together and also drain to your filter . the most important thing to remember is that your outlets need to be twice the size of your inlets . that way you wont have overflowing problems . you can stack the tanks on top of each other and drain from one to the other or use seperate inlets and just joined the drains together . if you need any more advice just pm me . i still have the central filter from my fish house if you want it .

Ok I also have a similar problem.. I'm planning my first fish house, construction side of it is ok. But when it comes to pumps and all that I'm a wee bit baffled.

My situation..
1) Very limited funds..
2) I've got hold off an old swimming pool pump so planning to rig that up (somehow)
3) None of the tanks I have are drilled...

If your tanks aint drilled i wouldnt bother with swimming pool pump get some sponge filters and a decent size air pump like a koi air 65 or something the only down side to this is water changes are an absolute nightmare . Consider getting your tanks drilled or buy yourself a diamond glass drill and do it yourself you can buy them on ebay and get full instructions with them . Swimming pool pumps use stupid amounts of electric so consider an ocean runner 6500 you can pick them up for £50 second hand alternatively get a couple of second hand pond pumps if your going to be keeping fresh water fish.

Hey Ste, all the fish kept will be freshwater. So what you saying get individual sponge filters for each tank? then one big air pump just keep the oxygen levels high?

i heard horror stories about drilling used tanks... im not worried about water changes being a nightmare, ive got lots of time on my hands, just not much cash...

cheers for the info
