Default Tank Heating

Hi,

I am having a nightmare with heating my 180 litre tank.

The first heater i got heated the tank to 32c no problem but then stopped working within weeks. This was a jewel one which was replaced a further three times. (bad batch maybe).

I finally got one that continued workign but my tank only heated to 27c. (300w heater) I then bought another 300w interpet heater and the tank heated to 29c. I have them both set to 32c but it wont go above 29c.

So today...... lol...... i bought a Visi-therm 300w heater and have that running too and yet i am only getting a max of 30c. The only reason i want it higher is to help my current white spot problem.

The room is centrally heated, temp of around 24c. There is no door or window near the tank or any draughts.

I am confused as to why i cant achieve 32c and wondered what everyone else heats their tanks with and how high temp goes etc. Anyone able to shed light on why i am having this problem?

very strange Neil!

to have so many heaters not working right makes me ask what thermometer you are using???are you using the stick on strip thermometer? i dont rate these and have the old glass type in all my tanks. wilkinsons do them for about 99p

Im running a 150 litre tank on a single 200 wat with no problems .

another thing is are you pre heating your replacement water at waterchanges ?

what fish has this whitespot?

sounds like it's just not meant to be lol

i am stumped as 180 litres is basically not a big volume of water and 300W should cook that tank up nice to your desired temp lol

I never go by readings on the heater (temp), i dont think i have ever owned a heater that operates to what it gets "set" at.

I take it you have kept turning the dial up on the heater and still cant get it past 30?

If you have just set the temp for something and not getting that temp, then welcome to the world of aquatic heaters!!!

The tank is a 180 litre and i used a glass thermometer until it smashed the other day when i was taking the temperature of the water for my change. Now i am using the stick on one but will buy another glass one tomorrow.

The water i use is 30c when i do my changes so that i dont get temp shock.

I know its really strange and maybe it is thermometer related, i never thought about that!

The fish that have white spot are, 1 discus, though improving, three clowns, four neons and a blue ram, all the rest of the fish are not showing sign.

Think my loaches are close to dying from it, and lost one blue ram, i have treated the water and have turned the temp up, its getting better but having to wait is horrible!

have you medicated?

if your tank was set up to acomidate your new discus then i would have thought it was to hot for the whitespot to take a hold. did this only start when you got your discus? it would be a shame to loose your clowns and others.

I have medicated with interpet whitespot treatment, i hve another to give on Thursday night to complete the course.

The whitespot came at the same time as the discus, but stupidly i bought clown loaches prior to the discus arriving, and i am told they are prone to it. So i think it was a case of new fish, stress etc.

The tank temp when discus arrived, was floating between 28 - 29c. I thought it would have been slightly too hot too, but it is deffo white spot. It has only really attacked the loaches, the rest just have a few spots.
