I recently gave my angels to my bro, when i first got them from a mates dirty tank one was beaten up around its face, he said it was due to them fighting. but since its been in my bros tank its developed a hole in its gill cover. suspecting some type of fungus or rot, any ideas apart from melafix and water changes? thanks people.

I think sticking with the current routine, melafix and water changes might be a good option actually, unless the condition deteriorates and then you would probably want to go for a specific anti-bacterial med such as Myxazin or Interpet.

With the water changes, i would do as much as reasonably possible depending on tank size i guess. I would aim for something like 30% a day or 40-50% twice a week, its amazing what a good difference high water changes can make to bacterial and fungal issues. Sometimes its your best medicine.

I must stress the importance of a good water conditioner, dose according to the label, not too much as all water conditioners as far as i know can reduce oxygen content of water a little bit if over-dosed and with the problem possibly affecting fish's gills, you want to maximise available oxygen in the water, on the subject of o2, i would keep the tank temp at about 76 max and make sure there is a good amount of water surface agitation.

For the water changes i would try and get the water going in the same (or within 2-3 degrees Farenheit) of the water coming out.
