Default best shoaling fish???

hi you lot i need some help! i am changing my tank around at the moment, it is a 6ft trop tank that i have reduced my fish to........... 10 clown loach,10 red rainbows,6 conga tetras,5 silver shark, loads of corys, 2 feather fins, royal plec, clown plec and a few others! now the question is what fish do YOU think would be a good shoaling group for it ie neons, rummy nose, cardinals the list goes on. i want them to be good shoalers that will keep together looking at about 20 in the group!!!

I've had a lot of shoaling tetra in my time and the best shoalers if thats what you looking for in my experience are Rummy Nose

By the way, you may be aware of this already, generally speaking most fish only shoal when they feel threatened, for example in the LFS or if you are re-arranging the tank and doing a large water change.

But i do find that Rummy Nose stick together closer than most, even when not in a threatened environment.

In my planted tank, my Neons disperse a lot, i like to think this is because they feel safe and relaxed. The same is true of a lot of my other tetra's.

I would go for rummy nose tetras, or cardinals. with a bunch of zebras zooming on the top.

Just a thought really on the small tetras you are planning I think they may end up being lunch for some of your tank mates.

For a start the Congos are aggressive feeders and will nip anything in their way and when they attain about 2.5-3.5" in length they will happily gobble cardinals and rummynose tetras so I would steer clear of small tetras. Equally the rainbows depending on the species are likely to munch the tetras and as the clown loaches grow you may find the tetras on the menu.

I would suggest going for a medium sized barb like the maharaja barb as adults these look stunning and their behaviour is similar to that of Congos.

If you want to improve the shoaling of your Congos I would add 4 more similar sized fish I have a shoal of 10 which includes 3 females the addition of the females means the males are frequently displaying they don't harass the smaller females at all but it does mean the colourtation of the males is at its best most of the time.
