I had a bristle nose cat for over 20 years and in that time I used to feed him peas (shelled) lettuce, ( potatoes , they say to boil these but I never did I used to peel one cut it in half and put it in the tank ) spinach, broccoli and cu***ber. TO prepare I used to rinse under the tap give it a shake and [put some in)

I use potato, to prepare it cut it into 0.5-1cm thick slices then freeze them.

Then before feeding I defrost it under warm water, once it has defrosted you will notice that it is quite rubbery. When fully defrosted put it in the tank, it will sink and the veggies quite often make a beeline for it.

Some times they don't though so leave it for a bit until they get the idea, once they get to grips with it they will seek it out as soon as you put it in the tank.

The advantages of this method is that it doesn't break down like cu***ber and will remain viable for a few days.

Over the years I've used cu***ber, lettuce, spinach, peas, tomatoes, melon, pear, apple, potato and carrot, think thats them all, the lettuce and spinach were blanched, peas boiled, everything else peeled and quick wash then dumped in the tank. Ordinary tomatoes went down way better than cherry tomatoes, these didn't get eaten, and melon shouldn't be left in the tank too long if it isn't eaten, seems to cloud the water after a couple of hours. Carrot didn't go down to well either, so never used it since.

Just a note on the potato front I have tried potato untreated and the fish ignored it.

I don't know what the freezing does to it but it certainly makes it pallatable for the fish. I think raw potato is just too hard and there is certainly a slightly different smell to it after it has been frozen and then defrosted.

Also cutting it into discs is helpful as it means the fish can literally sit on it and eat it ceetainly in the case of my garra.
