HELP! Losing Fish
Hi all,
Over the last couple of week I have lost several fish, initialy I atributed it to old age but now getting rather concerned.
My tank is around 200L & has been totaly stable for over 1 year now. Had only plastic plants, a small piece of old bogwood & 37 fish in it as a peacful comunity tank. (Bala shark, common pleco, clown loach, white cloud mountain minou, 2 kissing gourami, 2 neon tetra, 5 sepae tetra, 5 halequin, 5 rummynose tetra, 5 otocynclus, 9 guppies).
3 weeks ago I added some bogwood (from LFS). I soaked it in tap water for over 1 month to reduce the impact & water colouration.
2 weeks ago added 5 white cloud mountain minou (mates for the one I had)
1 week ago noticed pale scales on the bala shark so added some Medifin
5 days ago lost one new wite cloud & one rummynose (2+ years old), took the white cloud to LFS & they replaced him.
3 days ago the old white cloud and a rummynose were dead in the morning & the sharks dorsal fin was damaged. I added more Medifin but the shark died that day.
2 days ago Water change (weelky)
Today 1 guppy & another white cloud died. Also the gourami are sitting on the bottom of the tank, they look ok except they never do that & are never so still.
When I did the water change I took particular care on the water testing before the change. Tested the Ph, Amonia, Nitrate, Nitrite & found nothing wrong at all.
Now I am concerned about the rest of the fish as I dont know what is going on. Could the Medifin doses cause it as they were close together? Could I have added a disease from the LFS twice ? Could this be due to the bogwood somehow? (As this water is slightly brown from the log despite my efforts.)
Any help on this would be much appreciated.
P.S. Sorry for the long post but wanted to give the full picture.

Ye hear of this type of thing happening quite a lot with seemingly no reason,if ye didnt find nothing with the tests, maybe you shoulld smell the water nn see if it smells different lol,
ive heard loads of times this!! and something is nearly always in the water (tank that shouldnt be there.... Common ones are dead fish that has popped out even though they have searched the tank, Likely suspects are KIDS messing about, a mate had his kid pour nail varnish remover into his tank .. hope it works out ok....

The new fish have obviously introduced disease into the tank, any photos?
There's a few members on here who can help diagnose.

Hmm I think you misunderstood me, when I say lost/losing I mean DEAD/DYING. I scooped each of thier dead bodies out of the tank. Indeed looks like another guppy is gonna die now, as his tail is deteriorated... possibly nipped today.
Gonna re-test the water now !

If the tail is deteriorating its probably fungus. Melafix or Interpet no.8 would be a good treatments to use, there are others as well.

please find attached picture of the poorly guppy I have today you can see the bands of catilage/bones. Should the Medifin not solve any fungal infections?

the tretment you have used is for ponds right? did you get the dose right for your tank?
It could be like ROB-C said the new fish could have brought a infection in with them!
its hard to find out what realy caused the problem and your right to remove dead dieing fish asap so they dont polute and cause amonia/nitrite problems!
i would not think the bogwood would cause this so u can rule that out.
what were your water tests for the aquarium?
good luck i hope they pull through!
keep posting on their progress as threads like this help others !

Have you cleaned the filters recently? Simple thing but leaving this to long can cause an increase in organics that somefish cant stand and the bogwood may have been the tipping point.
I'm not suggesting you take the bogwood out but clean your filters do a series of partial water changes.
I'm not sure about the treatment you use but I would recommend esha 2000.

hi all,
Sadly todays fatalities are another white cloud & 2 more guppies
Yesterday re-tested the water & found that the nitrite were slightly elevated (my fault as must have been over zelous with the undergravel cleaning!) but were not scary high around 0.3mg/L.
So I did another partial water change (10%) & added more Medifin.
Yes you are correct when you pointed out it is normaly used for ponds my usual LFS said that it is what they use. I would be happy for you folks to check my dosage though. Medifin add 10ml to each 230 litres, tank dimensions 57x20x12 inches therefore I add 10ml right ?
If you wise folks recomend a better/more suitable treatment I am willing to go & buy it today.
P.S. Thanks for removing my doubt over the bogwood.
