Not a bad idea if your tanks are on an out side wall.

If your tanks are not on an out side wall you can utilise a hose pipe trailed through the house, rig the hose up to a powerhead such as maxi jet 1200 and you can water the garden with the waste water then to refill I attach another pump to the hose in the garden and drop the pump into one of my water butts that I use to catch the effluent from my RO unit as this is significantly purer than tap water and I do not have to use a dechlorinator in my tanks and therefore disease remedies when neccessary are far more effective.

If refilling using tap water just plug the hose on to an outside tap and put the dechlorinator straight into the main tank. I have been doing this for over 10 years it takes me about 45 minutes to change 60 gallons of water. Generally I can sit down with a cup of tea and watch telly during the whole process aside from getting up part way through to reverse the flow through the hose.

I even do something similar with my reef tank although I refill from a pump in a bucket the emptying process is the same as for my freshwater tank.
