Default Nitrite in my tap-water

For the past week i have been getting readings of approx 0.25mg/l nitrite in my tap-water and i am not happy

I am aware the legal limit is 0.50, but i never even get a reading on my tapwater normally, and i test once a month just out of curiosity. Always an undetectale level.

Going my Thames Water report for my area, in 2007 the average reading of nitrite in the tap-water was 0.027 (from 36 samples) and the max was 0.2

Another argument for getting some kind of water-purification device?

I might read up a bit more on these HMA filters, i dont think they involve quite the same level of p*ssing about as RO do they? I mean having to put loads of stuff back in the water like minerals etc?

Does anyone know if most HMA units come with the cartidges, i assume they do?

I have seen a 3-stage HMA unit from Devotely Discus for £75 and it reckons it treats 20,000 gallons of tap-water, which going by water changes would last me 3-years! Can they really eb this economical?

the replacement cartridges for the unit are £31.48

On Plymouth Discus the 3-stage unit is £89 and replacement cartridge pack is £39.99

Are we talking about spending £75 to £89 here and then being able to filter up to 20,000 gallons for water changes? If so, i think i like this.

i think you would be ok with the HMA filter and possable the 2 pod? do a little research to see if you need 2 or 3 pod Alex.

first its a sediment pre filter that protects the hma membraine filter if u replace the prefilter regular then i dont see why they wouldnt last that long and your right they have no waste water.
your also right in they dont alter the chemistry of the wqter( they dont remove the minerals or alter the ph) they just remove the chlorine and heavy metals and nasty stuff.

i have come to realise that the discus boys use more hma than ro. and they mix/blend enough ro into the hma to get the ph right .adding more or less they can controle the ph of their water.

im tempted just to purchase the replacement pod/canister and hma membrain and incorperate it in my filter.i could then use filterd water before the final ro membraine and if needed switch a tap over to ro pod for my ro water . in the new house i plan to have it in the utility room where i can get to it easy as mine is under a unit behind my sink.

alex join bidka if you plan on getting one from devotedly discus you may save a couple of pounds and Mark is donating 3% of members purchase to a show funding they are doing later this year.

Thanks Rob, appreciate that input buddy

It's my understanding that the main difference between a 3-stage HMA unit and a 2-stage is that the 3-stage removes chloramine and the 2-stage doesn't.

But i am only going on the reading i have done this morning on-line

Catch you later on about it, off out now

Thanks again

Does anyone know if a HMA unit will remove nitrite and if it has any effect on nitrate from the tap-water supply?

Hello lex sorry not to reply to your message I have been on holiday. An HMA will not remove nitrate from water and would not come into contact with nitrite unless it was run by a power filter, the three stage is what I use and I can reccomend using one as they are superior in their capabilities against aquasafe type products that remove nothing but convert chlorines into other substances that can affect any meds you use.The devotedly discus is probably the cheapest around.

Cheers Ray, i was doubtful a HMA would remove Nitrate

I am also quite keen on the idea of HMA as drinking water for myself
