Unhappy Your Disasters!

Just wondering what ranks as your biggest disaster's / **** up's in fish keeping, could be pure bad luck or man made **** up's also add the cost of it financially if you can bear it

For me in order of horror

1. Rio 300 that was full of water and fish, smashed onto my floor when the stand it was sitting on collapsed, it was not a proper fish tank stand, just an old chest of drawers. So man made **** up there! I rescued all but about 2 fish. The cost to me was £200 for new tank of the same size and i also lost a heater (£10). But the main problem as you could imagine was 300 litres making a break for freedom, really ****ed my flat up for a good few weeks. I also cut myself badly and still have the scar from not being careful when collecting all the smashed glass! Numerous items of paperwork that happened to be on the floor got ruined and also the laminate flooring is permantly ****ed now, so the real cost was probably closer to £300 plus

2. Not sure what i was doing with about 25 Midas Cichlid Juveniles (about 1.5") big, but i had them in a 4 footer until i worked out what i was going to do with the them long term. One morning i woke up and all but x3 of them were dead. To this day i still dont know why, the others were gasping, so i guess itn was o2 related, but the filters were still running and in terms of inches per fish, the tank was not massively over stocked and the water readings were ok (ammonia, nitrite). I just remember taking the day off work, was quite traumatised just seeing so much death in the tank.

3. Well over a year ago, had some kind of internal parasite problem in a Rio 180 community tank, wiped out 50% of the fish over the course of 5-6 weeks, affected fish becoming skinnier and skinnier, mostly my live-bearers. It was after this i had a complete re-start, and spent quite a bit of cash buying lots of F1 Guppies and Platies from a guy who collects them direct from Mexico region.

Touch wood, not had so much bad luck as you lex.

mine was i had a trigon 350 with rainbows and community stuff and few very expensive L no plecs, my air pump stopped overnight and the outlet for the filter just wasn't enough and i lost most of the fish, gutted.

also i had another frt in a seperate tank from denzel, she was a female and extremely gentle and friendly, she scratched herself and got an infection, i had to inject her with antibiotics twice a day for a week and clean her wound daily, also daily water changes, she didn't make it, i cried like a baby

well over the years I have had quite a few disasters , to many to mention them all, so hears a few, when I first started off I set up a 4 ft community tank ,lost a few fish , learnt a bit more restocked and everything settled down, I put this first tank, in the old lean to at the back of the house, every thing was fine for months, then one extremely hot day after work went to feed the fish arghhh they were all dead, the water had got so hot in there that it had become impossible for the fish to survive(lesson one dont put a tank in a leanto with a plastic roof or conservatory )todays prices around £50.00 -------2 xheater thermostat malfunctions on tropical tanks cost in fish about £100.00 -1 heater thermostat malfunction in marine tank cost around 250.00 in fish and because in my younger days had a bit of a temper about £350.00 for smashing up my tank and equipment and packing it all in for a number of years ( and about £60.00 for a new carpet cause the mrs was well pleased having a horrible soaking deadfish smelling carpet in her best room) lol also I had stacked a couple of fishtanks out the back under the window and covered them with a tarpaulin for future use they had been there a few years and I had forgotten all about them , one day I decided I was going to set up some more breeding tanks upstairs took the cover off 4 broken tanks then I realised they must have been broken when I had had my windows changed a couple of years previously and they must have broken them cost around £200.00 my latest disaster was when I set up this new tank, it had been running for six weeks every thing fine ,I was on the computer looking at the forum when the electric blew ,I went downstairs turned it on again and could hear a noise went into the best room and started walking through water the bottom hose had come off the sump return pump and the pump was spraying the sump water onto the top of the stand ,the water was then running out all over the floor , fixed it, mopped up and had the customary warning off the mrs (as you do ) ,any more mishaps the tank goes have good quality laminate down and everything has dried so no cost touch wood lol.

WHO SAID FISHKEEPING WASNT EXCITING ? THE MRS HAS NEARLY THROTTLED ME A NUMBER OF TIMES BECAUSE OF ALL MY MISHAPS LOL

I hate to think what would have happened if i had a smashed tank like i had and was living with someone. Thankfully i currently have no one to answer to accept myself

Question

I have killed a few fish by handling internal filters etc, only neons and guppys , my biggest mistakes are not being able to care for my elephant nose and leaving my gibby plec in with my malawis to totally eat! all i found was the bones of a 10 inch plec!

my only major mishap was a few years ago, bought a 2nd hand heater off someone i had won 20 odd synspillum on ebay, had to travel miles to collect em, got em home and into tank, only heater i had was the afore mentioned so whacked it in tank, all was hunky dory, went to bed, woke up next morning to squeals of disgust from the wife, jumped outta bed, ran into living room to be greeted by the most horrendous stench of boiled fish oh no[or words to that effect]i said, at the time i was very upset, but now, oh how we laff eh mate

that was a shocker Tel, so apart from that you havent had any major **** up's? Thats good going considering the length of time you been keeping fish and how many tanks you have had running at various times.
