Question Daft Questions!

Newbie again....What the best method of cleaning Ocean rock? Has been out of a tank for some time and has spots of green algae plus general grime.
Cheers,

well despite any scare mongering you might hear, it's pefectly safe to use bleach (if required), as long as you take the proper steps to remove any traces of bleach after.

if you want the bright look of clean ocean rock (even if its temporary) then bleach is a good option. I've done it a few times now.

I use a 5% bleach solution and soak the ocean rock over night in it (95% water, 5% bleach in the bath). I think i had to up this to 10% once for some stubborn stains.

Basically after this i would rinse well with water from my shower head, then the ocean rock should be soaked in a de-chlorinator, they say "double dose" is okay for bleach, but i use about x5 dose. This will remove all the toxic elements of bleach after the rinsing that are a hazard to fish. I soak mine for a few hours this way, then they are ready to use. I usually add a few rinses with the showerhead just to make sure.

Drying them in direct sunlight also eliminates any bleach on them apparently.

you mean like a jet wash? i dont see why not but it may not kill any organisums deep inside the rock where as the bleach would.

NOTE!
I know this is a marine thread and both myself and frylover dont keep marines so i would also want a salty member to comment before taking action !

Grandad,trick,slash to name a few.

as frylover said its ok to bleach ,and give it a good rinse afterwards , I used to tip out the bleach give it a good swill then still leaving it in the bucket turn the hose on and let the water get rid of the excess bleach over a 24 hours period then as a final insurance boil it before adding to the tank . a pressure cleaner will take off the lose but you will still be left with stubborn stains .and if you want it brilliant white then bleach it .
