theres 2 main reasons for using egg crate...1]to keep live rock off the bottom of the tank, which enables better flow, which in turn helps to cut down on nitrate etc...2] you can use it to make shelve structures, build the shape you want, then stack the live rock on it

you get people with a 4ft tank and 10mm base with about 60kg live rock plus corals so your tankbase can take quite a lot off weight providing you have plystyrene underneath as i red a bbloke filled his 5 footer he just bought with the glass on the concrete without polystyrene.Result ?cracked base and he wanted to demand his money back from seller instead off reading up before starting his hobby
