Default Another 'help' thread!

First time poster, and generally clueless about fish, so please bear with me!

I have inherited a pond (my partners late husband), and she wants rid of it. I understand at the moment that fish sales are very slow with the (?) two diseases around currently, so private sales are the way to go?

Only problems is that I honestly do not have any idea how much the set-up is worth, and therefore don't want to be taken for a complete ride.

There are around 30 fish - friendly koi, some of the pure white ones, orange black and white, and a golden one, along with goldfish etc. They all seem to be breeding etc as well.... Fish sizes run from 2+feet to a few inches. There are two pumps/filters as well... I can get photos.

Three questions really - what sort of ballpark price would we realistically get, what is the best way to sell (I understand they can 'grow legs', so I want to be 'koi' about where I am - sorry for the puns).
Finally, the water is rather cloudy at the moment - I don't want the fish to suffer or anything, so what would be best to use to get rid of it?

Many thanks for your time.

If you are talking about koi as large as that, make sure you dont get shortchanged. You are talking hundreds for the collection.

Here are some pointers (although these are high quality, yours are unknown): http://www.essexkoi.co.uk/userimages/procart49.htm

Any chance of some pictures?

You are right to keep it quiet on the locale.

... if only I had a spare pond ...

Apologies for the delay - I have been having fun trying to take photos (and it's difficult with a crappy camera and a green-filled pond!

So any ideas as to the potential value? Or even how we can unload them? Keeping them is not an option...

I think you may have a hard job if you are looking at selling as a job lot, as most koi ponders would already have a filtration set up and koi, so they may only be interested in certain fish.

Then you may have someone intersted in the filtration but not the fish , but you will not be able to sell that until all the fish are sold.

As to koi prices it is not easy to tell without a good pic of the fish

The filtration I would say could go for around £200 to £250 possibly more.

Are there any koi clubs in your area that you could contact ? if not then possibly advertise them on a Koi forum . We have a for sale area in my forum, but it would help to have a rough location of where you are , eg county.

As to the cloudy water , do you happen to have any test kits to test the water with , there are a number of reasons for cloudy water high amonia /nitrite being two of them.

If you are unable to sell them, a fish rescue centre may be an option. They will collect and rehome the fish.

Fish re-homing centre Sorry guys but to me that sounds like the sort of company that collects unwanted furniture to sell on to those on low income . Sadly the prices they then ask for the stuff is beyond what a person on low income can afford.

Don looking at the picture you have posted , I can see what look like 3 large Sanke , those are the ones with orange on them , they alone could go for £100 + each. The white and black one could be a Becko , cant see the size but value could be around £80 + . The white ones could be Platignum Ogons an 8" one would set a buyer back around £35.

The goldies ( goldfish) anything from £5 upwards.

I have 2 ponds , one 300 gallon for my smaller fish and a 2000 gallon for the big boys , both sadly overstocked, if not I would have been happy to give you a price for some of your fish.

My advice to you is not to rush in to getting rid of them, as that looks like a nice collection. Although a friend and I run a koi forum I also post on a number of others forums, and would be happy to help you move your fish on.
And offer advice on keeping them alive until such time you can sell them.
