i just started this thead to see what other people views on bubble eyed goldfish. whats your opinion

personally even though they can look good i think that they are a bit cruel on the fish who have to endure having a massive bubbly growth on their face

to confirm i just dislkie the idea of them !......

i believe that if the bubble pops then it will not regrow, and dont see the point of keeping them !Fancy goldfish are hard enough to keep healthy at the best of times, let alone these eye sacks and potentiol of dammage to their eyes

I really don't like these, the ones with the 'pop-out' eyes on the other hand do look good and from all acounts don't suffer anywhere near as much.

personally, although I dont have any, I quite like them.

If they are kept according to their requirements then it would be no more cruel than keeping normal shaped fish in the wrong water parameters.

Bubble eyes have been around for centuries and will be around for many more to come. In eastern culture the fish is symbolic of their spiritual beliefs, it brings a sense of well being, wards off evil spirits. IIRC there is something above the eyes of a fish being spiritual in Eastern culture as well (Someone correct my ignorance if I have got it wrong)

I was given 2 goldfish by a friend, they were neglected and abandoned in a goldfish bowl by people who previously lived in her flat. One of them has a deformed mouth, It swims ok, but feeding is a real issue. I have to crush food to ensure it gets plenty to eat. He puts up a good fight.

Should I cull this fish because its quality of life is hindered by a genetic disfigurement? Certainly not, it now takes pride of place in my 6ft tank with my other coldwater fish.

Lynsey, if you are watching the fish are doing well LOL

They are definitely a specialist fish, they must be kept with each other or similar breeds only, in an indoor tank with no sharp objects, collections of rocks or plastic plants and a guarded filter inlet. The water quality must be very good and they should be fed a good quality fancy goldfish food. They should also be bred from good stock. In those conditions they should at least be free from health issues.
