Fancy goldfish - swim bladder disease
I just wanted to get some feedback on if anyone has tried to cure swim bladder disease in fancy goldfish. i have a fantastic calico veiltail goldfish, 2 years old, and living in an indoors large unheated aquarium - he has just started to loose his balance and get in a bit of a panick when he looses balance.
Any solutions out there?

I deliberatley give a broad range of foods to get the fuill spectrum of nutrients and fibre.
They have spirulina, new spectrum small granules, frozen foods, beef heart foods, decaps brine shrimp and others.

Dont give them flake food. Try to supplement the diet with frozen peas and daphnia. Can be frozen daphnia but live daphnia will entice them to swim for their food. Especially when they lie upside down.

GARDEN PEAS!
try feeding a garden pea or two! frozen are fine all you do is defrost, remove the skin and crush between fingers and feed! Something in the Pea does help with swimming problems. i think its helps by clearing blockages within their digestion system! fancys are prown to swim/problems and i agree with D.R. on not feeding flake as they gulp to much air while feeding

I feed my fancys with flake food but i soak it in a little tank water beforehand so it sinks so they dont eat it at the surface= no gulping air, but yes i have found peas work really well feed them at least once a week and they keep them regular!!!

Reading the OP again,
if the fish has only recently developed swimming and balance problems, then its probably because it has reached sexual maturity.
More noticeable in females that become gravid with eggs, females carrying eggs puts additional pressure on the swim bladder.
It is more of a condition, rather than a 'disease'.

You could try raising the temperature on your fish with the problem. I know they are cold water fish but the veiltails especially because of body shape do suffer from swim bladder problems. I do not generally treat any of my goldfish with any medications but I do have a bottle of Esha 2000 on standby in my fish-house just in case of problems such as this.
Check out the Bristol aquarists site, this is very informative and has some great pictures of British bred goldfish shown at some of the major coldwater shows around the country, I have pasted the url to the diseases section of the site, I hope it helps.
