Default deformed discus fry ( photos)

i have been away for a couple of weeks and before i went my pair gave me a batch of baby's
well now they have grown a bit and are around 4-5 weeks i can see they look deformed.
they all have a flat top to their dorsal fin( this should be a rounded shape)
i have over 20 babys that may not ever be good quality to sell or pass on to others.

do you play God! Culling deformed fish to keep fish within our hoby the best they passably can be?

just thought after all the problems we goto to get our fish to breed its not all plane sailing .

often a large batch of fry means large culls/losses ( in the wild only the strong survive!)

enjoy the photos.
Rob.

Unfortunately culling is something that has to be done on occasion, but at the end of the day it's up to the individual whether they cull or not. Hopefully deformities won't be a regular occurance for you.

yeh nick

one reason could be generic from the parent fish! Not in this case as i have had rounded fry last time.

this time it was lack of waterchanges on my part.

i had a holiday to get ready for and then the purchase of a new house so the breeding tank was not so high on the list ( i know its no excuse)then i left them with my cousin and he fed them up....didnt think they would survive whilst i was away.
came back to very greedy 4 week old's that have got past the 4 week difficulty period that i had problems with last time. Last batch just would not eat and one by one died off.

why i sak myself did i choose difficult fish .

next time will be better!

now the wife will not alow me to cull them ( she says life is life ).......i cant keep 30 + healthy discus let alone 30 deformed.

I share these Lows with you all as fish keeping is not all about the high's

Maybe keep some of them going and see what happens? See if they start to take on the correct shape, maybe just not grown properly yet with no water changes. Don't know if that would have affected them, I know heehaw about discus, but might be worth a try?
