Posted Nitrite levels

Me again! I've matured the marine tank with "Sea Mature" and I'm now waiting for nature (and the filter) to take its course. The ammonia levels have risen, then crashed - as they should. Now, the nitrite levels have risen - which is great. Obviously, I have to wait for the nitrites to crash before the nitrates go up BUT how long does it take for the nitite levels to go down. I'm testing daily. Any advice/experiences would be very welcome.

the nitrites can take quite a while as you say nature is taking its course, it is a common phenomonen for nitrite to hang around the 0.5 mg/l mark for what seems like ages before disappearing. are you using a sump or seperate trickle filter? as nitrates can be kept low by just circulating the water in the sump through the trickle then filling the tank with nitrate free water. do you have live rock?

We will be having live rock but haven't put it in yet as we want the levels at zero first. So, we're going to be using a protein skimmer and external Fluval filter. Also got a reverse osmosis unit so will be filling the tank with everything-free water. Thanks for replying, Stu.

you dont need to cycle the tank at all if your using live rock this has a full complement of micro organisms to completely cycle any nitrogen based waste produced. all you do is add the rock provide at least 10 times the tank volume in circulation around the rock and it will have a massive ready made natural filtering capacity. give us a call on 02392648104 and i'll dicuss any queries you might have.

Hello sally why not put the live rock in now?.I put in 80 kilos in a 4x2x2 and the parameters are perfect no skimmer just circulation pumps the rock will cycle the tank for you at least 10 times faster i know because i have just sold half a ton of rock and the great thing i can pick and choose what bits i like like a kid in a sweetshop

The live rock contains all the nitrifying bacteria you need, put it in your tank now and go for it!
What is the water turnover in your tank?

Water turnover is about 1600 litres per hour (180 litre tank). The chap in the fish shop - they specialise in marine -said not to add living rock yet...
Had considered putting rock in now but am indecisive because I don't want to risk everything going pear shaped.

change your fish shop sally! the first thing you put in the tank is live rock. he just made a few quid out of you selling you rubbish you dont need!!! i set up a 1000 litre reef once put in 100 kg of un cured live rock skimmed it like hell for 4 weeks. ammonia went sky high then 0 nitrite the same. nitrates went up above 200 mg/l but disappeared in a week. i had nothing but a tunze skimmer halide lighting and loads of water movement. when i install a reef i put in live rock on day one and fish by day 3 and they are always ok!

Thanks for that, Mark. Modifying lid to accommodate protein skimmer as we speak. Will let you know when everything's up and running.

Just like living in a fishing village, you get used to it, but can always use a couple of plug in air fresheners! not as bad as the cat litter tray!!!
