i have a black moor goldfish who started being a bit floaty last friday. i tested the water and the nitrates were high, so i changed the water and did not fee the fish over the weekend. when i came in on monday he seemed just fine, so i fed him with flake food instead of his usual crisp food. he began to float up again. this morning i came in and he was fine, so i fed him some peas and am doing another water change as the nitrates were still a little high.

my questions are - is the floating more likely caused by high nitrates or by constipation in this case? and how long will it take to flush the nitrates out of his system? should i also keep him on peas for a while?

alot of fancy goldfish suffer from swim bladder problems which is a possibility in your moor, some treatments will work but not always

Try using a heater, it sounds like you have him at work (?) so maybe the temp. drops over the weekend?

What are the nitrate levels in the tank and in the source water that is presumably from the tap?

I doubt it is the nitrates that are causing the problem as this seems to happen after feeding I suspect it is a gut problem as opposed to swim bladder I would keep him off of the dry food feed things like brine shrimp and daphnia this will not clog his guts like dry food.

If he likes peas I don't see why he can't have them and if they seem to alleviate the problem then great but he will not survive on an exclussively pea diet he will need a bit of protein this is where the daphnia and brine shrimp come in get it in the frozen form don't feed the dried versions they are awful and will still lead to gut trouble.

The tank is at work, but the heat doesn't drop significantly over the weekend. The tank has live plants in it and is in direct sunlight.

The nitrates are high - at about 80ppm in the tank water - and at 0ppm from the source water from the tap.

My current plan is to keep Christo and Jeanne-Claude - his red head oranda tank mate - on peas and blechy frozen fishy food, and continue to try and get the nitrate levels down - then maybe reintroduce some dry food to see what happens.

Sound good?
