take2!!

water changes are what essentially remove your nitrates, they are reason we do water changes really. so you may not be doing them weekly or not changing enough each time.

also your tap water could contain nitrates so test that too

If you are doing enough of a water change weekly, you should be able to keep your nitrate level within about 25ppm of your tap water.

The actual percentage required is different for every tank and will largely depend on the stocking and feeding levels.

A well stocked tank is likely to require more like 25 percent per week.

RO should have zero nitrate, but be aware that you can't use pure RO.

yeah i always advise a 30% water change weekly. 10% is nothing really. this will cure the problem without fail and you'll have faster growing, healthier fish and no illness at all.

I use JBL Nitratex in my filters which absorbs the nitrate. They are a one off purchase as they can be replenished in a heavy salt solution. Purchase two sets so you can have one set in the filter while the other soaks in the salt solution. I use a similar product to filter the tap water before it goes in the tank. A good stock of live plants should absorb some of the nitrate.
