I have been keeping tropical fish for about 5 years now and spent a great deal of time studying ways of the best treatment .Basically if you can dose the tank in the fist day of the whitespot infection you can be lucky if the fish however get dusted especially loaches then best to save your time and efforts as there is no effective cure. The off the shelf treatments are little more than expensive coloured water and largely ineffective as the parasites can only be killed in the free swimming stage ( i.e day 1) Basically if you've got whitespot your tank is doomed and you will need to consider starting again. Believe me i've been there so many times. Sorry to be so blunt but hope it helps you wasting lots of time asking in aquatic centres and money on useless chemicals. |

Wow, David5100, sorry to hear about your experiences with White Spot, but i think you been real unlucky, i have had a few outbreaks over the years, only ever lost one fish, and to lose a complete set up, i dont understand that unless you got really sensitive fish, all you have to do is increase temp to 82-84F and add the propriety treatments, end of!!! Well thats my experience, maybe i have been lucky. As far as i am concerned getting white spot in my tanks is the equivalent of a human getting a cold, bit annoying, but will all be over in 5-7 days. |

hi everyone, can you please tell me what you use for treatment of whitespot? i've been treating my tank with some super ick cure for 5 days already and some fish are doing just worse, like rummy red nose tetras, (oddly the others have improved); |

malchite green
formalin or a malachite green formalin mix and I have had luck with acriflavine but htis shouldn't be used with fisah you want to breed as it can make them sterile. |

To say not to treat at all and give up is stupid you are right in what you say about the spots being untreatable at the on fish stage but they do drop off to complete their life cycle hence most treatments need to be used over several day sometimes weeks.
I wpould also recommend esha exit and 2000 together as this will remedy any secondary bacterial infections as well as irradicating the parasite just make sure all carbon and absorbtion media is removed before the remedy is used. |

If it is really bad copper can also be used this needs to be kept at a fairly high level over at least 7 days but consider this as a last resort only. |
