red streaking on fins of fantail |

I have a 2 1/2 year old fantail in a 20 gallon tank with 4 other goldfish. The other fish appear to be fine. The one in queston has developed red streaking throughout his fins. This seams to be getting worse. He is eating and swimming fine. It is hard to find good info on how to treat this "infection" if it is that.My past experience with medicating fish tanks has not been succesful and eventually all fish died. Now 20 yyears later I have a new problem. Can anyone offer advice? |

could be to do with water quality or stress? |

Are the other 4 goldfish commons/comets???
You are way over stocked and this is making your fish ill.
For these fish you need at least a 70 gallon tank to rovide stable water conditions.
Do you know what your water parameters are? |

I had a fantail with this problem, I tried everything to save it but it died after about 6mths, I did get rid of the red streaks but it was never right again and as I said died after 6mths, was caused by over stocking. |

i think ploppy (god i hate that name) is barking up the right tree. you say you havnt had fish for 20 years and our knowledge on fish keeping has really advanced since those days and you may need to do some refresher reading on the "tank cycle" unless you understand it already. |

wayne im always going on about he cycle and water changes but i firmly believe this is 90% of the cause of all fish illnesses. i for one never get sick fish and im convinced its related to good tank maintenance..
im like a broken record some times but its for the fish. |

Have to agree Danny Boy, it can be near impossible some times to stop people fully stocking in the first week.
I recently had a customer who had put 90, yes 90 fish into a Juwel Vision 190 in the first week. Needless to say they were in big trouble. What really annoys me, is that this gives newcomers a totally wrong impression of this hobby. Its easy as long as you follow a few simple rules. I wonder how many people give up within the first month because of this? |

yep JK this could be an intresting thread. do you not feel pressured in to selling these people these fish if they ask? i relaise that its a double edged sword in a way. ive always been dismayed at the lack of any cycle leaflet or info in many fish shops for new guys. i know when i started out and was lucky enough to get told the right info from the start but even when i wanted to learn it all seemed very daunting. thank god for the internet. |

Of course there is some commercial pressure involved, but I look at it this way. A customer who gives up within a month is no customer at all. On the other hand, a successful customer can be with you for years and years.
If you think stopping some people buying too many is tricky, try making them buy only really hardy ones as well!!!
The worst thing of all is this new fashion for tiny tanks.
Everyone thinks they still have room for a community tank.
I could go on and on.......... |

Ok - So the consensus that I have too many fish in the tank or not enough water changes? My dad said I should isolate the fish and treat it? Is there safe medication for this that won't kill the fish?Is getting the fish in it's own tank in cleaner water the answer? Or get another tank and split the fish? Anyone want 2 ryunkins? Thanks for all the advice! |

Is it possible for you to get a larger tank for all the fish to go in? A larger volume of water is more forgiving where water quality is concerned.
Found this site, got some good advice on it for various symptoms, hope this helps

Red streaking on fan tails is down to water quality simple as that. |
