I have 6 oscars, they've have never had hith. But as I'm aware diet can be a factor aswell as poor tank conditions. Your conditions sound fine, however, how large is your tank? what filterage? the more the better where oscars are concerned (dirty little so'n'so's)Also they need a good food soucre containing all vitamins. Do you salt your tank regular? as for treatment, you can get fron the shop octozin, this treats the main problem, you are also likely to get secondary conditions, as they are sickly and can pick up other things. Hopefully someone whos had this problem can advise you better, they're a clever lot on here.... |

martin - copied this from a web site, might be of some help
Hole In The head Disease (HITH)
Symptoms
The main symptom of this disease is the small pits, mainly on the head, which give the disease its name. These are usually whitish in colour, and there may be yellowish mucus trailing from them. The fish may also stop feeding and become hollow bellied.
The disease affects mainly cichlids, particularly oscars and discus, but can also affect gouramies.
Causes
The disease is linked with a protozoan parasite, Hexamita (sometimes known as Octomitus). This may often be present at low levels in fish, but the acute infection does not occur unless factors like poor water quality or poor diet have an influence. Therefore, Hexamita alone may not be the primary cause, and good water quality and a varied diet should prevent this disease occuring.
Possible cures
The fish can be treated by isolating to a separate tank and adding either Dimetridazole (5 mg/litre) or Metronidazole (7 mg/litre). In some countries (including the UK), these are only likely to be available via veterinary prescription. The treatment will probably need to be repeated a few days apart, with a 20-30% water change between each treatment. Medicated food is useful for treatment, but this can be problematic if the fish is not feeding. Direct injection near the affected area is likely to prove very effective, but should only be attempted by an appropriately qualified person. In the UK, Waterlife Octozin may also be used for HITH disease.

sounds ike you are looking after them well. ive heard electrical leaks in the water could be a cause too. HITH causes as far as i know are sketchy at best. |

I never found the reason for my green terror getting this but he is now fine 4 months on and no other fish have been affected, the treatment i gave him started to work straight away and within the week was gone, he was scarred but is now back to his former glory! if you would like to try metronidazole let me know as it would be easier for me to send them to you rather than you trying to get them from a vet. |

Hi Martin, for some reason my email's to you won't go through, do you have a hospital tank you could treat him in? other wise you would need 46 tablets to complete the treatment, drop me a line and let me know. |
