hi everybody, i'm new to this, setting up first marine tank, my live rock is arriving tomorrow (still in very early stages!) my problem is that my hydrometer keeps giving radically different readings. it will go from 1.021 to 1.026 literally seconds later.I got my local shop to look atit and they said it was fine, I make sure there's no bubbles in it, am I being really stupid? does it matter where in the tank I take a reading from? should I take an average?

wouln't do any harm to get another hydrometer, in case yours is faulty. they should be quite cheap.

water should be the same throughout the aquarium, once all salt is dissolved and you have some water circulation.

Don't bother with a hydrometer I had grossly false readings that led to a slow mystery decline in my tankget a refractometer best bit of kit you will ever buy www.stm-shop.co.uk £40 worth every penny.

Well don't want to cause confliction cause people have different opinions, but you must make sure your hydrometer is in a level table, so your not just holding it, a hydrometer is also useful, as it can stand high humidity levels in fish rooms etc. The most affective method i use is a floating hydrometer (lol im not an oldtimer). Sometimes refactometers are hard to read, but there is a new one on the market which shows you the reading on a little LCD screen. Hope this helps

only got my refractometer last week was using two hydrometers and i cant believe how inaccurate they are i even took the refractometer and a water sample back to shop to make sure i was doing it right or that it was not broke ,
i also have a floating hydrometer in refugium for a quick glance guide but dont consider it of any more use then that.
Hi niac dont worry about confliction for expressing your opinion myself i always like to hear different opinions it gives you the chance to weigh up the options am make your mind up, the type of people that get shirty about you not having the same views as them are normaly the ones not worth listening to

How far out was the hydrometer mine was reading 1.024 when in reality I virtually had the dead see in my house. Refractometer reading was over 1.03 no wonder things were going wrong everything sorted now though.
