If anyone doubts what can be achieved with an eco system method I would like you to read the march 06 issue of practical fishkeeping.
Page 44 Shark reef this is a tank run on the miracle mud set up in the Czech republic the take has a number of fish and inverts including the white tip reef shark and 2 black tip reef sharks no protein skimmer though.
Page 118 A large reef tank running on the Leng Sy principles miracle mud again. No skimmer total water capacity after displacement is roughly 350 gallons.
Only filtration is live rock and a miracle mud sump plus some phos ban.
I will shortly be removing a skimmer from my system entirely just to see what happens. I will be boosting surface agitation at the same time. |

and adding some more live rock to hopefully replenish the plankton population. |

Aside from the main theme of this thread, I thought this issue of PFK was a good one. Nice articles on lake tanganyika tropheus and also a very interesting one on the recently imported shoaling cichlid - Etroplus canarensis, a non territorial shoaling cichlid - amazing. |

It is one of the good ones I would have to agree Tropheus are one of my favourite rift valley cichlids I've never had the time or inclination to breed these fish but their behaviour with breeding is interesting. I actually find keeping marine is easier than keeping these fish. I do live in a very soft water area though.
gh less than 6 not ideal for rift valley's.
I aleways think African river fish are under represented in pfk they are obsessed with rift valley's amazonians and marine oh yes and koi but african river fish are often side lined probably due to availability but the Congo is as diverse as the Amazon fish wise it is ashame imports from the area are so poor. |

Hi Alan,
Are you running Miracle Mud in your eco system ?
I have heard that a skimmer is not used with this system. Will be interested to see your results. |

I'm not running a miracle mud set up its more of a hybrid system.
It consists of live rock and a DSB in an upstream sump that is 33" long 6" wide and 6-7" deep with a caulerpa algae scrubber on top.
It doesn't look as good as it could due to financial constraints but once I have made the mods I intend to it will be far more effective.
I do have a protein skimmer on the system which is rubbish and I intend to remove it when I can afford more live rock new metal halide lamps and a new pump that will up my water turnover considerably to around 30-40 times per hour so I can get some of the awful power heads out of the tank.
Water quality is excellent though, I have a pussey coral that fills half of the 3 foot tank this grew in the space of a few years from a 1" long frag. I have fragged from this coral as well.
Once I have got the system sorted I may well be posting some pickies but the system does have some inherent problems I used to run it on canister filters it was awful then its getting there to be honest it would be quicker to completely dismantle the tank and start again but I'm as stubborn as a mule and will not be defeated.
Thats one of the problems with marines it coist so much money.
This is the list of my needs:
- 2 new metal halide lamps
- a large pump that will turnover around 10,000 litre per hour.
- 10 kilos of live rock
- 20 hermits and 20 turbos
- numerous inverts as well including some true peppermint shrimps due to flipping aiptasia joes juice only knocks these ones back for a little while flipping things.
Then I can get shot of my pathetic skimmer the 10 kilos of rock are going to replace it.
In all the halides about £80 the pump at least £50 will go for a seio can't afford tunze. Live rock about £95 grazers about £50 and the numerous inverts probably another £100 so in total I need to spend about £375 on top of its usual expence.
Being a Civil Servant these are funds I do not have to spare!
If you want to see tanks running on the eco system go to www.paraquatics.co.uk and look at customer tanks a lot of the tanks on here run on the eco system method. |

Hi Nemo,
That is nice
Is the water as clear as it looks ?
I imagined it would be murky without the skimmer, I don't know why |
