Pleases could anyone tell me what is inside my live rock. I'm sure you can pic them out from these pics. Small zebra like tenticals, i have counted abut 10 all together of dirrents lengths and sizes. They don't seem to be causing damage or trying to eat anything..... they just move in and out the holes in the rock but i NEVER see the body?

Any ideas? cheers peeps...

yes, i have had these. they creep out of live rock and grab any passing food.

i also had ones with a faint stripe. some were under a centimetre in length, others twice that.

i found they did no harm and were just part of the fauna on the live rock.

We have these as well. Could be a brittle star. Could be a bristle worm in Dennis the Menace socks.

Its a brittle star - it will eat all the detritus under your rocks so dont get rid of them they are great as a clean up crew! when we transferred our rock to a bigger tank we have one that is a good 12 inches across and is just all legs - the body is relatively tiny.

Where would something like that come from?

I guess it comes in the same way as bristlework. It survives the journey into someones tank. I have a very small brittle starfish about 1/2 inch sq. never bought it..... its just there!! i guess that makes you right k.o.d it might be a brittle, do they self reproduce like the bristleworm do??

any idea's??

I looked up in my Aquaria Encylopedia book, I found something that looks like this called a Hydra (Hydra Viridis) but its freshwater, it says its has a body only a fraction of an inch big, and has 5 thin long tenticles - usually attaches to plant stems (however yours has attached to a rock probably because no plants?) / a marine variation / similar species, however the legs look identical to what you see and the body is basically a thicker short tube attached at one end. Whether that helps I dont know.
