I have 4 light tubes that fit a Rio400 tank (not yet setup - thats a fun thing for me to do in the summer). Anyway what I was wondering is if anyone could help me figure out what lights they are, and what they are used for? There are two different types, what info about the tubes would you need? Also for a tropical setup is just the inbuilt filter enough, as I've noticed lots of people use external filters too.

So far I've only spent a total of £200 for the Rio400 - thats for the whole tank with two lighing sets and 4 tubes, also supplied with a full set of reflectors for all 4 tubes (yes probably a bargain just for that), also the tank has the inbuilt filter supplied and the powerhead, and a full set of brand new filtration pads and brand new heater! - Shows you can start a really big setup on a budget!

At the moment I only have a small 2 foot tank with only one standard tube (when I replace it I simply take the old one to the supplier to get the same thing so Im really lost with that they are) currently the tank holds LOTS of convict cichlids as I put 6 in to start with, 2 of them knocked the other 4 off, and then my two parents unsuprisingly bred! - however now there are more than 6 they seem happy and arent picking off each other.

hi goeshere are they all florecant tubes if so look at one end of tube there should be some wrighting.whats the volume of water it olds,if not sure whats the length /width/ of tank in inches.if the filter came with the tank it should be ok,but if you are going to keep messy fish ie oscars or keep fish to full stock limit another filter would help.as for type of filter i prefer external ones eihm, but its up to whice type you prefer.because each type as good point and no so good,

The type of light will be written on the tube at one end.It really does not matter what type are used in a freshwater tank it is purely a matter of personal taste unless you intend to have a heavily planted tank, have a look and tell us so someone can explain the light range of the tubes.I have never used Jewel aquaria but most people seem to use an external filter aswell as the fitted one.Have a think about the type of fish you want to keep and the water parameters where you live then some one can let you know if they will be ok, or give you alternatives.

Okay heres the info I found on the sides of the tubes:

x2 Philips (light orange colour tubes)
TLD 36W/29

x2 Philips (light blue colour tubes)
TLD 36W/54

Im guessing the color and the 29 and 54 will be the most important bits of info here.

Any help identifying the type of these tubes will be really appreciated. The guy I got them from just gave them to me as he used suspended lighting. (I think thats why I got the lighting setup so cheap as he didnt use it)

These appear to be dedicated pages and info on the bulbs with more info if this helps:

Hi there, well done, bargain tank! I'm a retailer and to be honest the Juwel filter supplied with the tank is ***. By the sound of it the light tubes are the originals. the orangey ones being for plant growth and the bluey white ones for showing the fish colours off. theyr'e not that great either & I would change them for a pair of Interpet Tri-Plus and a pair of Interpet Daylight Plus when u get chance buddy. If u have any other Q's ur more than welcome to email me, deejdave@aol.com

All 4 tubes cant be originals as the large Juwel tanks only come with two tubes originally, the second set had been purchased by the previous owner. So which ones would be the originals? Also may I ask why they arent very good? Is it because they dont provide adequte lighting? All 4 tubes are covered in reflectors to double the output so I assume there is more than enough lighting when the tank only comes with 2 tubes by standard?

Thanks for the help.

If u buy a juwel light set you can get them with bulbs. Its not just the physical brightness of the tubes thats important (Bearing in mind WE can only see a small fraction of the wavelength of light being emitted by a light source) it's the wavelength thats important. The wrong wavelength can encourage algae, reflect the wrong colours off the fish etc. A light like the TRIPLus emits wavelengths in the Red, Blue and Yellow/Green wavelength and so will make the fish look better than one with a wavelength that is predominately in the yellow to red end of the spectrum (Phillips orangey bulb). You wouldnt neccesarily have any problems with the bulbs you have, but could have a mutch better looking tank with upgraded light tubes IMO.
